Discovering the Lotus Stem: A Culinary Delight
Discovering the Lotus Stem
A Culinary Delight
Have you ever aimlessly scrolled through a social media platform and possibly come across something that you've quite often heard about but don't know much in detail? Well I have. Recently, I came across a post which featured a dish consisting of the lotus stem as a garnish. The question was, what exactly is a lotus stem?
To begin with, the lotus stem indeed is the stem of one of the most beautiful aquatic plants and also India's national flower, Lotus. The fact that the lotus stem is considered an aquatic vegetable is quite often overlooked. It consists of a treasure trove of flavors and textures, making it a versatile ingredient. It has a long history in traditional medicine and culinary arts hence, this blog aims to highlight its importance and why it shouldn't be forgotten in kitchens around the world.
Kamal Kakdi, Nardu, Thamarai Thandu and Bhein are other names for this popular Asian ingredient. It consists of vitamins B6 and C, minerals like potassium and copper, and as well as dietary fibers hence making it a nutrient powerhouse and a super food.
As we all know and agree, lotus is one of the most beautiful flowers so there is no doubt that the stem is equally visually appealing. When cut into slices, as shown in the picture above, it forms a unique, enticing pattern similar to that of air canals making it prominently distinct in appearance. This vegetable, elegant to the eye, is crispy in texture with a mildly sweet flavor easily making it a culinary pleasure and also a good substitute for meat.
Indian kitchen use the lotus stem in various dishes like Nardu Yakhni, Nardu Shami Kebab, Kamal Kakdi ki Sabzi etc. This ingredient can be used in a plethora of preparations like pickling, braising, stir-frying, sauteing etc. From salads to desserts, you can include it in all your meals either as a main ingredient or even as a garnish making it one of the most diverse ingredients. If you're one to experiment with, this ingredient is definitely the one for you. Furthermore, one dish that really caught my attention was the lotus stem and sago dessert. It is a sweet dessert that is an elevated, healthy alternative to kheer and is absolutely mouthwatering.
The lotus stem may be an unsung hero in the culinary world, but its unique qualities and versatile nature make it worthy of recognition. From its inherent nutritional benefits to its appealing texture and taste, the lotus stem has the potential to elevate your cooking to new heights. So the next time you come across this enigmatic vegetable, embrace the opportunity to explore its wonders and unlock a world of culinary delights.
If you have ever had the chance to make, eat or even learn something interesting about the lotus stem, don't forget to comment below and let myself and others know. Until then, stay tuned for another blog on another interesting topic.
Have a great week y'all! See you soon!
